Over the years of rock music, one sub genre has been known to have gained a lot of fans due to its complex style. This style is known as progressive rock and was actually created in the United Kingdom and then spread to other regions. Scandinavia especially loved this sub genre and adapted it into what is now known as the style called Scandinavian prog rock.
Now progressive music is something that stemmed out from a combination of a lot of genres that melted into one rather complicated style. Now the reason as to why it is labeled complicated is simply because there are often a lot of sudden changes in tempo and beat. Because of these sudden changes, listeners would often be given a variety of sounds to listen to in just one song which can be quite appealing.
Of course as stated above, Scandinavia readily accepted this type of trend and adopted it. Now if one is wondering what is Scandinavia, basically, it is an area that is made out of three main countries namely Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Of course there are also secondary countries too like Holland, Greenland, and Finland.
The country that was really one of the pioneers of this sub genre was none other than Denmark. Danish progressive became quite famous in the late sixties because of bands like Steppeulvene, Alrune Rod, Ache, Blue sun, and many more. Of course they would sing their songs in their native language which is Dutch which made their music even more authentic.
Now a very big name in the industry was the prog band known as Burnin Red Ivanhoe which was created some time in the late sixties. What made them really well known was for their smooth combination of many different genres like rock, jazz, and blues. They were also known to add a lot of sounds from organs as well as violins and trumpets.
Now the Swedish also entered this music scene with their own brand of Progressive rock which was similar to the music created by the Dutch. However, their bands only became really popular during the very early nineties. Now Sweden still did not reach the level of Denmark when it comes to this type of music but the Swedish bands have proven to be just as good as the Dutch bands in the field.
Of course bands from Holland are also known for the music that they produce. Now what makes their style unique is that they would often try to fuse the rock sound with the sound that comes from folk music. It is for this reason that melodic tunes and songs with a little bit of tempo shifts and beat changes became the main ingredients for songs of these bands.
So as one can see, the progressive scene is actually quite a big thing in the region of Scandinavia. Now one should remember that even if this type of music did originate from the United Kingdom, its influence spread to the countries beside it. Of course it was because of this spread that the genre was able to gain a lot of popularity.
